At the Class A level of Minor League Baseball, pretty much everything is a learning experience.
Unfortunately for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the current lesson has been a tough one to absorb.
The Hot Rods fell behind early Sunday and never recovered, dropping a season-worst sixth straight game, a 5-3 loss to Rome at Bowling Green Ballpark.
"Somebody told us once when I was playing early on in my career that every team goes through two prolonged winning streaks and two prolonged losing streaks in 140 or 160 games," Hot Rods manager Matt Quatraro said. "If that plays itself out, then hopefully this is it for now and we can get this over with.
"Who knows, every team's different. But it's adversity and you have to learn how to deal with it."
Quatraro insisted the skid isn't due to a lack of effort. Instead, the Hot Rods simply aren't making their own luck when opportunities arise.
"Baseball's like this," he said. "Sometimes you can't get out of your own way for whatever reason, and then other times everything goes right and you have no idea why.
"We're hoping that starts happening soon."
Bowling Green's problems began early again Sunday, when the Braves got to Hot Rods starter Michael Jarman with runs in the first and second inning.
After allowing back-to-back singles and hitting a batter, Jarman gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Rome's Gerry Rodriguez which put the Braves up 1-0. The damage could've been worse, but Jarman worked out of the bases-loaded jam with minimal damage.
Rome was at it again in the second, when speedy left fielder Jahdiel Santamaria beat out a double-play grounder - allowing third baseman Samuel Sime to score and make it 2-0.
The Hot Rods pulled even in the bottom of the third, however, getting an RBI single from Tim Beckham and an RBI groundout from Henry Wrigley.
But the momentum was killed an inning later, when the Braves ended Jarman's day with a three-spot in the top of the fourth. Santamaria reached on an error from Beckham that scored Chris Fuller before Luis Sumoza and Jesus Sucre hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 5-2 in favor of Rome.
The Hot Rods got one more run in the bottom of the fifth on Beckham's third homer of the season, but it wouldn't be enough.
The Rome relief trio of Brandon Beachy, Clayton McMillan and Craig Kimbrel overpowered the Hot Rods over the final four innings, with Kimbrel touching 99 mph on the radar gun in the bottom of the ninth.
"They have good pitching, top to bottom," Quatraro said of Rome. "Whether they're behind or in the lead, they bring in guys that have good arms.
"But from our perspective, that's what you're going to see as you move up - so our guys have got to learn to put good at-bats together against good pitching."
Jarman was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs - two earned - on nine hits over four innings. Rome starter Zeke Spruill took the win, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings.
Beckham finished 2-for-3 with a homer and a pair of RBIs, but it wasn't enough.
"They've got some pretty good arms on their team. We've just got to see the ball and hit the ball," Beckham said. "If it's over the plate, we've got to hit it.
"We're staying positive - this is baseball. You're going to have your ups and downs and you've just got to make sure you don't get too down. We've just got to come together as a team, we know what we can do and we've just got to play good ball."
Notes -- The defensive play of the day came in the top of the fourth, when Beckham bobbled a routine pop up in shallow left. Left fielder Jason Tweedy swept in and grabbed the errant ball with his bare hand to record the out. ... Sunday was the second straight rough outing for Hot Rods pitching, as Rome recorded 13 hits. The Braves pounded out 16 hits in an 11-2 win Saturday night. ... In just the second Sunday home game of the season, Bowling Green Ballpark drew a crowd of 2,414.
