ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Ndamukong Suh has been fined a third time for roughing up three different quarterbacks in less than a year. The Detroit Lions defensive tackle doesn't plan to change his game."Not by any means,'' he said Wednesday after he was fined $20,000 by the NFL for a hit on Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton last week. He didn't like it much, tweeting: "$20,000REALLY???!!!''The former Nebraska star said he plans to appeal the fine."Who wouldn't?'' Suh asked. The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year grabbed Dalton and threw the rookie to the turf after he had gotten rid of the ball late in the first quarter of Friday's preseason game. Suh was flagged for unnecessary roughness."The league puts it on the defensive player to know when the ball is gone,'' Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.Suh was fined twice last year for hits on Chicago's Jay Cutler during the regular season and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme in a preseason game.Suh's checking account can absorb the latest hit. His five-year contract is worth $40 million guaranteed and as much as $68 million, though the NFL has increased the fine each time."Twenty grand? For the preseason? They're trying to send a message,'' teammate Nate Burleson said.Suh was fined $7,500 for what he did to Delhomme, grabbing his face mask, twisting it and slamming him to the ground. He was docked $15,000 for shoving Cutler hard and high in the back from behind during a game last December.Detroit's second exhibition game is Friday at Cleveland. Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas said he and his teammates are mindful of what Suh can do."Everybody sees it and it's the back of your head, but it's not really something you worry about,'' Thomas said. "Most of our focus and attention is between the whistles and it seems he's getting a name for himself for what happens after the whistle.''Suh, though, likes the comparison that has been made between him and former NBA great Shaquille O'Neal, whose size and power made him simply stronger than opponents, some of whom fell or flopped after he touched them."Shaq had the same problem when he was in the NBA,'' Suh said. "He kept playing. NBA Hall of Famer soon to come, one of the greatest big men I've ever seen, so I hope to follow in his footsteps.''Suh has some sympathy for the officials, trying to determine if he's playing within the rules."I really feel like I put the refs in a tough situation because of my strength,'' he said. But it's not going to stop his relentless pursuit of players with the ball?"I'm not going to stop playing hard,'' he said. "I owe it to my fans, my teammates, the coaches. That's one of the reasons why football is football. It's physical contact, aggression that is made exciting.''---AP Sports Writer Tom Withers contributed to this report.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Safety Randy Phillips has been waived injured by the Detroit Lions. The move was made Wednesday when the Lions also signed safety Aaron Francisco and released offensive lineman Jeff Maddux and cornerback Maurice Leggett from injured reserve.Phillips was one of the former Miami Hurricanes ex-booster Nevin Shapiro told Yahoo Sports he gave improper benefits from 2002 to 2010.He hurt his shoulder last week and didn't play in Detroit's preseason opener. Phillips played in four games last year, his rookie season, with the Lions and was listed as a third-string safety on their depth chart this season.

When veteran nose tackle Ron Edwards tore his right triceps last, week it zapped the Panthers of their lone veteran presence at that position and threw everything up for grabs. Now they're relying on youth to carry them - at least for now.Edwards went on injured reserve this past week. That leaves rookie Sione Fua, second-year player Andre Neblett, unproven Tommie Duhart and newcomer DelJuan Robinson as potential replacements. At the other defensive tackle spot, the three-technique, Corvey Irvin has stepped up and is running with the starters. He's being pushed by rookie Terrell McClain and third-year player Nick Hayden.Of the defensive tackles the Panthers have in camp, Hayden has the most experience with 13 starts. Irvin was a third-round pick in 2008 while Fua and McClain were third-round picks this year.Coach Ron Rivera said it's a huge opportunity for the young kids on this team to step up.Right now, we don't have Ron on the field, so at nose tackle we're going to try and find who's going to be the guy that steps up, Rivera said.Fua seems to be the likely candidate. He's coming off a good showing this past Saturday at Fan Fest.At the three-technique Rivera likes what Irvin has brought to the table after bulking up 15 pounds in the offseason and is thrilled with the play of McClain, who has battled back after missing the first two days of training camp.I've played college football and I've had to step in for guys that are injured, said the 320-pound Fua. You just have to step up and be ready to play. I feel like the coaches are preparing me well and I'm getting extra film study and extra meeting time with the coaches to make sure I'm ready for this game. It's vital for the young guys, the guys that are fighting for spots, to come out and perform and show what they have. The good news for the Panthers is Edwards is still around every day at practice, basically serving as another coach for this young group of defensive tackles.Ron Edwards is a really, really good D-tackle, McClain said. I learned a lot from him and I'm still learning a lot from him every day.He told us is we need any secrets he learned with other teams since he's been in the NFL all we have to do is ask. He said he'll be here every day with us, coaching us on and off the field. It's truly a blessing he's still here with us.Although many view defensive tackles as interchangeable - and they are to a certain degree - there is a distinct difference between play the one technique (nose tackle) and the three-technique.Fua's job at the nose is to take up blockers, a space eater per say, while Irvin' and McClain's job is to get into the backfield and be disruptive. They want that three-technique to penetrate, Fua said. McClain is really quick off the ball and has really good hands and really good speed. For me, I'm supposed to dominate that center. That's my game. We both have different games but we're both good at what we do. Hopefully we can bring our talents together and perform well on the field at the same time.At some point look for the Panthers to add veteran help at this position. But for now, the young defensive tackles on this team have a golden opportunity to prove they belong in this league. And everybody, including Irvin, who was cut last August near the end of training camp, has a chance to prove they belong. In all honesty, everybody is getting another opportunity here, Rivera said. This is a situation where we came in and didn't want to have any assumptions about anybody's abilities or their circumstances. It's a chance for us and for everybody to start fresh. So I think more so than anything else it's an opportunity to see what these guys are about.--Wide receiver/punt returner Armanti Edwards is out to prove those who say he's a bust wrong. With Captain Munnerlyn on the sidelines, Edwards opened Saturday night's game against the Giants as the team's starting punt returner and ignited the crowd by reversing fields and breaking a tackle for a 22-yard return. His next return was even better, a 24-yard punt return to midfield where he showed outstanding decisiveness in his cuts. But Edwards wasn't done there. He caught a 36-yard pass from Cam Newton in the hurry-up offense to set up an Olindo Mare field goal before halftime. He did have another pass in hands in the second half but had it ripped out by a defensive back at the last minute. It felt very different, Edwards said of the start of his second season. Last year around this time, I had no clue what I was doing but this year after working in the offseason I got better.Rivera said Edwards brought some energy to the team with his returns.Anytime you can have a dynamic returner that can give you energy, I think that is huge, Rivera said. The thing we have to understand in special teams there is hidden yardage. Instead of being pinned back on the 15 or the 20 like he was initially, to bring that ball out to the 35 or 45 yard line that is great. That needs to happen. With his elusiveness and his vision, if we block and do the things we are supposed to do as a special teams unit, the young man is going to do that for us. It's going to fall on us as a special teams unit to get him opportunities.--Unlike the John Fox era, the Panthers seem more intent on sticking with their running backs for longer periods of time.In the past DeAngelo Williams would rarely play more than three plays before taking a breather, but that wasn't the case in the preseason opener. Williams played almost exclusively in the first four series before giving way for good to Jonathan Stewart.Williams, who just signed a five-year, 41 million contract extension, looked sharp in his first action, carrying four times for 23 yards, the highlight being a nifty 20-yard run around right end.Williams was also used more in the passing game. He was the intended receiver on two passes, catching one for 16 yards.Stewart carried three times for 17 yards. As a team, the Panthers ran for 67 yards on 11 carries in the first half, a respectable 6.1 yards per carry.--Mike Goodson can be one of the most exciting players to step on the field for the Panthers. If only he didn't fumble so much.Goodson showed off his electrifying speed in the backfield and on kickoff returns, but also fumbled the ball away at the team's 24-yard line, a carryover from where he left off last season. In the second half Goodson put the ball on the ground again, but caught a break when it rolled out of bounds. If Goodson wants to get more reps in a crowded backfield he's going to have to figure out how to fix that problem.Rivera said he spoke with Goodson about the problems after the game and told him he wasn't going to give up on him, but said the problem is unacceptable. We have to protect the football, Rivera said.--Cam Newton admitted he had a lot of butterflies before the game, saying a lot of adrenaline was pumping...anxiety. But it was fun to start out on a positive note and keep all the juices flowing and to keep the ball moving. When asked about the speed of the game compared to college, Newton said, I wouldn't say the speed, I would say the philosophy of the game is extremely different. A lot of times they had me guessing out there, and I know this is just the beginning of what is more to come. So I just have to go back into the lab, so to speak, and watch film.QUOTE TO NOTE My performance was OK. It always could be better. After talking to (quarterbacks coach) Mike Shula there were some things that he saw that were good. But after grading myself I think we came off the field too many times and we left too many opportunities on the field. -- Cam Newton on his first NFL actionCopyright (C) 2011 The Sports Xchange.  Kicker Josh Brown couldn't wait to get out on the field at the end of the first half and the Rams with the ball on the Indianapolis 42-yard line.Brown has been one of the better long-range kickers in the NFL, and his regular-season long is 58 yards. This would be a 60-yard attempt.Asked if he had to lobby coach Steve Spagnuolo to try it, Brown said, He looked at me and asked 'Do you want to kick it?' Absolutely, why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I want to do this? That's the thing. He was like, 'I can't say no when you're already halfway out there,' so I kept running.Spagnuolo concurred, saying, I don't think I could have pulled him off the field. He was running out there before I even said, 'Let's kick a field goal.' But that's probably the situation to do it. It's at the end of the half, with two seconds, so it was nice to see him hit it.Added Brown, It's the preseason, that's what makes you want to do that. I mean, we're indoors, and we had the opportunity. You know, it's good that the coaches see that I'm still capable of hitting a ball that long. I hit a lot this week over 60. Go figure. It's not something you practice very often, but we had a 'deep day' that we called it, and everything was 50-plus. It pays off to be able to practice that once a week and have that stroke down and have the timing down, and it paid off tonight. It's an exciting play. If it only counted, you know?Asked what was going through his mind, Brown said, I really remember getting out there, and then the fans really started getting into the moment. You could really see that the fans were like, 'OK this is going to be fun.' They wanted to see it. I backed up and aimed just right of center because I really wanted my ball to come around and just draw it in. I just kept my eyes down and swung, and that's the thing.I actually thought I miss-hit it, because I swung really hard. I made great contact, but I wasn't really sure. Then I looked up and it was done, right in the middle. It was a great feeling. It was really cool to have the fans really getting behind you right before because that's energizing. If they would have been quiet, it just makes you more nervous.Later in the game, Brown hit a 53-yarder, but then there were no more long attempts even when a 58-yarder could have been tried in the second half.Would he have wanted to try another? Making the throat-slash motion, Brown said, That was enough long kicks. For the game, Brown had four field goals and kicked off seven times. Asked if it would be nice to get another kicker in camp for as week or two, Brown smiled and said, I'd lobby for that.--Because of injuries, depth was so thin at cornerback that the Rams signed Tae Evans Saturday and he suited up and played that night against Indianapolis. Evans, a rookie free agent, had been in camp with the Arizona Cardinals until Aug. 2.Not playing Saturday night were Ron Bartell (thigh) and rookie Mikail Baker (hamstring). Jerome Murphy had surgery earlier the week to repair a broken bone in his ankle and Marquis Johnson remains on physically unable to perform because of a knee injury.Promising undrafted free agent Chris Smith was placed on injured reserve after injuring his knee.Al Harris had been expected to miss the game because of a knee injury, but he got in some time in the first quarter when the rams went to their nickel. Justin King, who started on the outside, moved inside and Harris was on the outside. Also seeing time was rookie Tim Atchison, who is a safety and Chris McGee, another rookie that was signed earlier in the week. The Rams brought in Rod Hood for a physical, but he wasn't signed. Hood spent the entire 2010 season on Tennessee's injured reserve list after being injured in the offseason and going on IR June 15.Before the game, coach Steve Spagnuolo said, You worry about getting toward the end of this game and those guys having to play special teams and getting more reps, and the thing I worry is ... in a normal game those guys do the same thing, but you taper off during the week and get them ready. Right now we're still kind of right in the middle of training camp so there is a little concern there.--TE Michael Hoomanawanui was anxious to get back on the playing field this summer after missing eight games in his rookie season because of ankle injuries. However, training camp has been a nightmare since Hoomanawanui suffered a concussion Aug. 4. He didn't practice for the next week and was confined to the team hotel until Aug. 12 when he was able to watch practice.Coach Steve Spagnuolo said, When he was exerted he was still getting symptoms, so Reggie (trainer Reggie Scott) felt it best not to do that anymore and just leave him be. He's been in the hotel. We haven't put him in meetings. We're just going to be really careful. You don't know; everybody reacts to those things differently.QUOTE TO NOTE We run into a path, what the defenses give you. On defense, we know it well, you can't take away everything. Some offenses don't always find what you're leaving out there. I think Josh (offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) and Sam (Bradford) and the rest of the offensive guys and all the offensive coaches are putting something together where you are always on the attack. And keep the defense on the defensive. And that worked out tonight, I'm sure we are going to hit our bumps during the season. When the defense plays a little bit better that we're going against. But all in all I think we did a good job. - Coach Steve Spagnuolo on the offense not showing much going down the field against Indianapolis.Copyright (C) 2011 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved.

PHILADELPHIA -- Pete Pihos, a Hall of Fame receiver who helped the Philadelphia       Eagles win two straight NFL championships in the 1940s, has died.       He was 87.              He died Tuesday at a nursing home in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a long       battle with Alzheimer's disease, the team said.              Pihos played with the Eagles from 1947-55. He was on the team that       captured the title in 1948, and he made the winning catch in the 1949       championship game against the Rams.              Pihos finished his nine-year career with 373 catches for 6,519 yards and       61 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in       1970.              Pihos starred at Indiana before going on to the NFL. He was a stalwart       on both sides of the ball at tight end and defensive end and missed just       one game in nine NFL seasons.              A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Pihos was nicknamed "The Golden Greek."       He lacked blazing receiver speed, but relied on pirouettes and pivots to       break free from would-be tacklers and was a punishing runner after the       catch.              "I try to get position on my opponent without him knowing it," the       6-foot-1, 210-pound Pihos told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1955.       "I always watch my opponent's feet. When he crosses them or makes a       definite commitment, that's when I make my move. I'll do whatever       maneuvering necessary to reach the spot where the pass is to come."              Pihos still ranks among the Eagles' team leaders in a number of       offensive categories. He's third in catches behind Harold Carmichael and       Pete Retzlaff; fourth in touchdowns after Carmichael, Steve Van Buren       and Tommy McDonald; and 10th in all-time scoring with 378 points. He was       selected to the franchise's 75th anniversary team.              A fifth-round draft pick by the Eagles in 1945, Pihos didn't start his       NFL career until 1947 because his college career was interrupted by       World War II, when he served in the military under Gen. George Patton.              Pihos' impact on the Eagles' offense and defense was immediate.       Philadelphia reached its first championship game in his rookie season,       losing 28-21 to the Chicago Cardinals.              The tandem of the sure-handed Pihos and Van Buren, a running back and       fellow Hall of Famer, gave the Eagles a powerful offense, and       Philadelphia claimed consecutive NFL championships in 1948 and '49.              Philadelphia beat the Cardinals 7-0 in a blizzard in the '48 title game       to claim its first NFL title.              In the '49 title game, Pihos caught the eventual game-winning 31-yard       touchdown pass from Tommy Thompson, and the Eagles beat the Los Angeles       Rams 14-0 to become the first team to win back-to-back NFL championships       in shutouts.              Eagles coaches later decided to have Pihos concentrate on offense when       the platoon system was instituted. But when the Eagles needed help on       defense in the 1952 season, Pihos stepped in and was an All-Pro at       defensive end.              Pihos' last three NFL seasons were his most productive. In 1953, he had       career highs in receptions (63) and yards (1,049) and scored 10       touchdowns.              At Indiana, Pihos was a versatile star during the 1942, '43, '45 and '46       seasons. He led the Hoosiers in receiving in 1942 and '43 and in rushing       in 1946. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.              As a member of the Army, Pihos served 14 months in Europe during World       War II. He told the Pro Football Hall of Fame that he had vivid memories       of serving under Patton, whom he called "a tough son-of-a-gun."              A native of Orlando, Fla., Pihos is survived by his ex-wife, Donna       Pihos, who has been his caretaker for the past 12 years; their daughter,       Melissa Pihos; and children from a previous marriage: son Peter Pihos       Jr., daughters Nikki Pihos Walker and Lisa-Anne Pihos Mann, and stepson       John Wesley Poole.                                  Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Detroit rookie defensive lineman Nick Fairley is making progress as he recovers from surgery on his left foot.Fairley was walking around Tuesday with a protective boot on the injured foot. The defensive tackle missed the Lions' first preseason game last week, but at least now he's able to move around and be with the team out on the field during practice."He got the cast off of his foot. Now he's in the walking boot, so now he can walk around," coach Jim Schwartz said. "You can't have a guy that's on crutches that can't walk around out there."Fairley didn't have much to say about his injury, but he's clearly putting in the effort to stay involved in team activities."Right now I'm taking it day by day. I'm in the treatment room, trying to get back as fast as I can," said Fairley, a first-round draft pick. "I just use this time more to be in the film room, getting my mental reps."Detroit has had its share of injuries during training camp, but the Lions looked impressive while beating Cincinnati 34-3 in their first preseason game last week. Detroit plays at Cleveland on Friday night.Calvin Johnson, who was nursing a minor problem with his left shoulder, practiced Tuesday, but now cornerbacks Eric Wright and Chris Houston are recovering from groin problems. And then there's Fairley, the Auburn product who is hoping to team up with Ndamukong Suh to form an imposing duo of defensive tackles. Detroit drafted Fairley with the No. 13 pick. He entered the draft after winning the Lombardi Award as a junior with Auburn."It's funny to watch him in meetings," Suh said. "He's not going through anything, but he's blurting out answers and just interacting with other guys, particularly myself and the D-tackles."The Lions have health concerns on the other side of the ball, too. Offensive lineman Jeff Backus (pectoral injury) and rookie wide receiver Titus Young (hamstring) have been out. Rookie running back Mikel Leshoure tore his left Achilles' tendon and will miss the season. But quarterback Matthew Stafford looks fine after offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder, and running back Jahvid Best seems OK after being bothered by toe problems last season."I haven't even thought about his physical problems," Schwartz said. "I think he looks good. He looks like Jahvid Best."Best led the Lions in rushing last season with 555 yards as a rookie. Although Stafford, Johnson and receiver Nate Burleson looked in synch against the Bengals, the running game remains a concern.Best tried to provide some reassurance on that front."We're not too worried about it," Best said. "We've only had pads on for about a week and a half now, so you can't really work on the run game until you do that. We know throughout the preseason it's going to get better and better."                            Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. The Dolphins won their first preseason game  a 28-23 victory against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night at the Georgia Dome. Yet even so, the Dolphins' first-quarter performance left the overall impression  even amid the victory  that the team had taken a step backward instead of progressing.Entering the game, Dolphins' coach Tony Sparano said he wanted, more than anything, to use the game as another practice opportunity. He wanted to see what some of the team's younger, inexperienced players were capable of doing when the lights turned on and the pressure became greater.A lot of what Sparano saw in the final three quarters  and maybe even the great majority of what he saw  must have offered him satisfaction. And good thing, too, given his team's disastrous start.By the end of the first quarter, the Falcons led 17-0. They'd outgained Miami 163 yards to 17. They'd recorded 10 first downs, nine more than the Dolphins' one. And, perhaps most troubling of all for Miami, this was the first-quarter stat line for starting quarterback Chad Henne: 1-for-5 for 5 yards with two interceptions. His first-quarter quarterback rating: 0.0.Meanwhile, Atlanta's Matt Ryan completed 6-of-10 attempts for 90 yards and a touchdown. And Falcons running backs Jason Snelling and Michael Turner combined to average nearly five yards per carry on nine carries. To put it simply, the players Miami will most depend upon when the regular season begins proved, well, undependable  at least in their first test of the preseason. After his team returned to South Florida on Saturday, Sparano was asked whether it was easy to dismiss the performance of his starters given the lack of practice time to date during the preseason. It's not easy to dismiss by any stretch of the imagination, he said.Still, Sparano defended his first-teamers and said, There was some things in their 14 plays I thought were done pretty well. But you don't dismiss it. But at the same time you don't really carry a lot of stock into the fact that you really have only had seven practices with this group of guys. The Dolphins played against the Falcons without running back Reggie Bush and Brandon Marshall, both of whom were held out for non-injury reasons. Veteran linebacker Jason Taylor also didn't play.As for the mistakes  especially the ones on offense  Sparano said miscommunication was a factor. And that, he said, could be the result of a lack of a real off-season program, given the lockout, and the rapid pace in which the Dolphins are installing their new offense.Henne's first interception was a catchable pass that bounced in and out of the hands of tight end Anthony Fasano. The second interception went straight to Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, who merely had to jump up and catch the errant pass, which was intended for Brian Hartline. On that one, Sparano said that Henne and Bess weren't on the same page, and indicated that Bess ran an incorrect route and that Henne then failed to make a proper route. When you go back and watch the film it was kind of two wrongs make a wrong, Sparano said. But then, thanks in part to back-up quarterback Matt Moore and a lot of younger players, the Dolphins made things right. They outscored Atlanta 28-6 in the final three quarters.Every team is going to have corrections to make in the first preseason game, said Miami linebacker A.J. Edds, who led the team with seven tackles. I mean, whoever's going to win the Super Bowl this year is making corrections tomorrow morning after the first preseason game.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange.
