Kicker Josh Brown couldn't wait to get out on the field at the end of the first half and the Rams with the ball on the Indianapolis 42-yard line.Brown has been one of the better long-range kickers in the NFL, and his regular-season long is 58 yards. This would be a 60-yard attempt.Asked if he had to lobby coach Steve Spagnuolo to try it, Brown said, He looked at me and asked 'Do you want to kick it?' Absolutely, why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I want to do this? That's the thing. He was like, 'I can't say no when you're already halfway out there,' so I kept running.Spagnuolo concurred, saying, I don't think I could have pulled him off the field. He was running out there before I even said, 'Let's kick a field goal.' But that's probably the situation to do it. It's at the end of the half, with two seconds, so it was nice to see him hit it.Added Brown, It's the preseason, that's what makes you want to do that. I mean, we're indoors, and we had the opportunity. You know, it's good that the coaches see that I'm still capable of hitting a ball that long. I hit a lot this week over 60. Go figure. It's not something you practice very often, but we had a 'deep day' that we called it, and everything was 50-plus. It pays off to be able to practice that once a week and have that stroke down and have the timing down, and it paid off tonight. It's an exciting play. If it only counted, you know?Asked what was going through his mind, Brown said, I really remember getting out there, and then the fans really started getting into the moment. You could really see that the fans were like, 'OK this is going to be fun.' They wanted to see it. I backed up and aimed just right of center because I really wanted my ball to come around and just draw it in. I just kept my eyes down and swung, and that's the thing.I actually thought I miss-hit it, because I swung really hard. I made great contact, but I wasn't really sure. Then I looked up and it was done, right in the middle. It was a great feeling. It was really cool to have the fans really getting behind you right before because that's energizing. If they would have been quiet, it just makes you more nervous.Later in the game, Brown hit a 53-yarder, but then there were no more long attempts even when a 58-yarder could have been tried in the second half.Would he have wanted to try another? Making the throat-slash motion, Brown said, That was enough long kicks. For the game, Brown had four field goals and kicked off seven times. Asked if it would be nice to get another kicker in camp for as week or two, Brown smiled and said, I'd lobby for that.--Because of injuries, depth was so thin at cornerback that the Rams signed Tae Evans Saturday and he suited up and played that night against Indianapolis. Evans, a rookie free agent, had been in camp with the Arizona Cardinals until Aug. 2.Not playing Saturday night were Ron Bartell (thigh) and rookie Mikail Baker (hamstring). Jerome Murphy had surgery earlier the week to repair a broken bone in his ankle and Marquis Johnson remains on physically unable to perform because of a knee injury.Promising undrafted free agent Chris Smith was placed on injured reserve after injuring his knee.Al Harris had been expected to miss the game because of a knee injury, but he got in some time in the first quarter when the rams went to their nickel. Justin King, who started on the outside, moved inside and Harris was on the outside. Also seeing time was rookie Tim Atchison, who is a safety and Chris McGee, another rookie that was signed earlier in the week. The Rams brought in Rod Hood for a physical, but he wasn't signed. Hood spent the entire 2010 season on Tennessee's injured reserve list after being injured in the offseason and going on IR June 15.Before the game, coach Steve Spagnuolo said, You worry about getting toward the end of this game and those guys having to play special teams and getting more reps, and the thing I worry is ... in a normal game those guys do the same thing, but you taper off during the week and get them ready. Right now we're still kind of right in the middle of training camp so there is a little concern there.--TE Michael Hoomanawanui was anxious to get back on the playing field this summer after missing eight games in his rookie season because of ankle injuries. However, training camp has been a nightmare since Hoomanawanui suffered a concussion Aug. 4. He didn't practice for the next week and was confined to the team hotel until Aug. 12 when he was able to watch practice.Coach Steve Spagnuolo said, When he was exerted he was still getting symptoms, so Reggie (trainer Reggie Scott) felt it best not to do that anymore and just leave him be. He's been in the hotel. We haven't put him in meetings. We're just going to be really careful. You don't know; everybody reacts to those things differently.QUOTE TO NOTE We run into a path, what the defenses give you. On defense, we know it well, you can't take away everything. Some offenses don't always find what you're leaving out there. I think Josh (offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) and Sam (Bradford) and the rest of the offensive guys and all the offensive coaches are putting something together where you are always on the attack. And keep the defense on the defensive. And that worked out tonight, I'm sure we are going to hit our bumps during the season. When the defense plays a little bit better that we're going against. But all in all I think we did a good job. - Coach Steve Spagnuolo on the offense not showing much going down the field against Indianapolis.Copyright (C) 2011 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved.
